Understanding MPPTs and stringing

The electrical tree, Auto String, Add String and multi-inverter behaviour.

1 min readLast updated

The tree

For DC string systems the tree reads Main service panel, then inverter, then MPPT, then string, then modules. A circuit is always identified by inverter instance and tracker, never by tracker alone.

Add String

Add String creates a circuit on the next eligible MPPT with spare capacity. Nothing is placed on tracker 1 by default. If no legal destination exists, the action is refused with the reason.

Auto String

Auto String plans an allocation from the resolved architecture and the verified conversion capability, and refuses when the data does not support a decision. The plan is presented for review before it is applied.

Moving strings and empty MPPTs

Circuits can be reassigned to another MPPT. An MPPT with no circuits shows as empty; a tracker carrying more circuits than the published DC inputs shows as over-subscribed.

Commercial and multi-inverter

Multiple inverter instances are supported, each with its own tracker namespace, so larger multi-MPPT systems keep their circuits unambiguous.

Microinverters and optimizers

A microinverter branch has no DC strings or trackers; it is sized as an AC branch circuit against the continuous-current allowance of the branch device. On optimizer strings the optimizers regulate the string, so module open-circuit voltage is not summed in series; manufacturer optimizer counts, string power and regulated voltage apply instead.

DC to AC ratio

ClickSabi shows a planning band for residential rooftop systems and flags undersized, in band, oversized or review. These are ClickSabi planning guidance, not a code limit and not a manufacturer limit.
